If there's any one thing I've been missing from Chicago, it might be large-scale designs. The show-stopping kind of focal, statement designs you see at celebrity weddings, for example. I'm sure not missing them anymore! The Friends of Art and Flowers, sounds just about perfect for me, right? LOL I'd first heard about it when Joseph Massie did his lecture and hands-on workshop for the group- both were fab, naturally. And since joining the auxiliary group this past spring, I've had some great conversations about botany, and design, sculpture and horticulture, the science behind Oasis, discussing our personal design philosophies, and as a leader, imparting our collective experiences and skills to the assistants, so that they can lead in the future. From our great selection of wholesalers, I procure the highest quality and freshest flowers from the coolers, creating and editing what will ultimately become a harmonious design in my head with the elements on my cart, We process and condition the flowers in our truly well-stocked workspace, and the next day we design live on the floor of the museum. Here's my very first piece! The design featured two kinds of protea, possibly my favorite genus of flowers, both banksia and baby peach mink were prominent in the design, backed up by hydrangea and hypericum, with ornithogalum , rising high above to balance the wrought backdrop of the sandblasted manzanita branches. All the flowers were procured from Mayesh Detroit. I'm super busy elfing it up this week (that means putting up Christmas decor for you non-industry people LOL) but I will post my two other weeks of sculptural large scale floral designs I've created at the Detroit Institute of Arts. This is just the coolest, guys!
